How To Flush BMW E46 M3 Brakes With Motive Power Bleeder

Updated: Apr 29, 2022

As promised, this week's video focuses on the actual flushing of your brakes. Since many people don't do this regularly or don't know they're even supposed to do this, I thought I'd cover some basics before we get started.

Why do we need to flush our brakes regularly?

- I'm going to get a little scientific with you here. You see, brake fluid is hygroscopic. This means that it attracts moisture from the air. Not flushing brake fluid = moisture contamination of your brake system = corrosion = failure = $$$$$$.

- Brake fluid will also slowly collect little bits of metal, dirt, rubber, and all kinds of debris which can lead to buildup.

- Bottom line: flushing your brakes regularly will extend the life of the brake system. Think of it as a juice cleanse detox for your car.

A normal brake flush will run you about $80-$120 at the shop, so I'm showing you how you can do it yourself. There are many ways to go about this, but I'm showing you a mess-free way to do it that only requires one person.

You want to make sure your car is ready to go on jack stands (if you forgot how to do that, check out our last blog post) and have all your supplies ready.

TO PREPARE:

  1. First, we need to extract the old fluid from the master cylinder. As stated in my video, this can be done with a turkey baster but I prefer to use the syringe (linked below) for its flexibility and fluid capacity.

  2. Refill the reservoir. Fill it a little above the MAX line since we'll be flushing the system and pushing a lot of the old fluid out. While flushing, make sure you don't let the fluid get too low in the reservoir as this can introduce air into your brake system.

TO FLUSH:

  1. Attach the Motive Power Bleeder and get the pressure to 15psi.

  2. Start with the furthest brake from the master cylinder. You'll move in this order: - rear passenger side - rear driver side - front passenger side - front driver side

  3. Clean the brake

  4. Loosen the nipple

  5. Attach the catch bottle

  6. Drain fluid

  7. Close and tighten the nipple

  8. Clean the brake area again

  9. Repeat for other brakes

  10. Refill master cylinder to MAX level

And you're done! If you're more of a visual learner, you can check out my video below:
